Frequently asked questions
NocoBase is an open-source no-code platform for building custom business applications without programming. It provides a visual interface for creating databases, designing forms and views, building workflows, and implementing permissions—all through point-and-click configuration rather than code.
You can build CRM systems, project trackers, inventory management, HR tools, asset databases, or any custom application your business needs. NocoBase uses standard relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) behind the scenes, so your data is stored in professional formats rather than proprietary systems. It includes role-based permissions, workflow automation, data relationships, multiple view types (tables, forms, kanban, calendar), API access, and a plugin system for extending functionality.
The core software prerequisites for deploying Nocobase are as follows:
Node.js: Version 20 or higher.
Yarn: Version 1.22 or higher.
Git: For cloning the source code.
Database: MySQL 8+, MariaDB 10.9+, PostgreSQL 10+, or SQLite.
For more details on the installation requirements, refer to the Nocobase docs.
Implement multiple backup strategies. Back up the PostgreSQL or MySQL database using standard database backup tools like pg_dump or mysqldump—automate these with cron jobs. Back up file uploads stored in the file system. Back up NocoBase configuration files and any custom plugins.
Kamatera also offers redundant daily server backups. Many administrators implement automated database backups pushed to remote storage, combined with weekly full server snapshots. Test restoration procedures periodically to ensure backups work when needed.
NocoBase includes comprehensive role-based access control. Create roles for different user types (manager, employee, contractor, etc.), then configure what each role can access at the table, field, and record level. Users authenticate with usernames and passwords, and you can implement additional security measures like IP restrictions or VPN requirements at the infrastructure level. Since you control the server, you can implement your own security hardening, cloud firewall rules, and access policies.
This depends on your server resources and application complexity. A modestly sized server can comfortably handle 50-100 concurrent users for typical business applications. With proper server sizing, NocoBase scales to hundreds of users. The advantage of self-hosting is that you can scale infrastructure to match your needs without per-user pricing. Add more CPU, RAM, or separate the database onto a dedicated server for larger deployments.
