Frequently asked questions

What is Apache Guacamole?

Apache Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway that allows you to access your computers and servers through a web browser. It supports standard protocols like RDP (remote desktop protocol), VNC (virtual network computing), SSH (secure shell), and telnet. Instead of installing remote desktop client software on every device, users simply open their browser, authenticate, and connect to remote systems. All the protocol translation happens server-side, so the browser only needs to display graphics and pass keyboard and mouse input.

What are the system requirements for deploying Apache Guacamole?

Apache Guacamole requires Linux as the server OS, a minimum of 2GB RAM and 2 CPU cores, and specific software dependencies.

Key requirements include:

Hardware: Minimum 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM.
Server dependencies: Cairo, libjpeg/libjpeg-turbo, libpng, libuuid.
Client dependencies: Java JDK, Apache Maven, and a servlet container like Apache Tomcat.
Database: MySQL or PostgreSQL is recommended for connection management.

For more information, refer to the Apache Guacamole installation guide.

What level of technical support is included?

Kamatera has a global technical support team that is available 24/7/365. You can email, call, or use the chat. Our customer support representatives will provide a prompt response to resolve your concerns.

Can I upgrade and downgrade my server specifications?

You can scale up or down at any time.

When you create a monthly server, you will prepay monthly for the server configuration you selected at the time of creation, plus a prorated amount for any upgrades made after that time. When you decide to terminate this server, you just need to pay for the current month in which you canceled. However, once the new month begins, if the monthly server is terminated, you will not be charged.

If you deploy hourly servers, your charges will vary depending on whether the server is powered on or off. Once you terminate your hourly server, you will no longer be charged. You may terminate the service at any time.

Do I need to change firewall rules for every user?

No, this is a major advantage. Without Guacamole, you’d need to allow RDP, SSH, and VNC connections from wherever users might connect, like home networks, hotels, or coffee shops. With Guacamole, only the Guacamole server needs access to your internal systems. Users only need HTTPS access to the Guacamole server. Your remote systems’ firewalls remain tight—they only allow connections from the known Guacamole server IP address.

How many concurrent users can one Guacamole server handle?

This depends on server specifications and what users are doing. A moderately powered server can handle dozens of concurrent SSH sessions (text is lightweight) or 10-20 concurrent graphical desktop sessions. For larger deployments, run multiple Guacamole servers behind a load balancer. On Kamatera, you can start with a single server and scale vertically (more CPU/RAM) or horizontally (multiple servers) as your user base grows.

Do I need a specific operating system to host Guacamole?

Guacamole is most commonly hosted on Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, or CentOS. Kamatera provides clean, optimized images for all these distributions, allowing you to begin your installation immediately.

How does Guacamole compare to VPN solutions?

VPNs give users network-level access. Once connected, they can potentially reach anything on your network. Guacamole provides connection-level access, where users access specific systems you’ve explicitly granted. VPNs require client software installation and configuration. Guacamole works immediately in any browser. VPNs can be complex to troubleshoot. Guacamole is straightforward—if HTTPS works, Guacamole works. Both have their place, but Guacamole excels for remote desktop and SSH access without VPN complexity.
