PhotoPrism is an AI-powered photo library you run on your own server. You get intelligent tagging, powerful search, and a beautiful browsing experience, all in complete privacy. Deploy it on Kamatera and your entire library stays secure, organized, and accessible from anywhere.
On PhotoPrism, you can search by label, location, resolution, color, quality, date, camera, and more, with filters you can combine freely. PhotoPrism uses machine learning to automatically tag and organize your photos by identifying faces, scenes, locations, and colors. Search for last summer’s RAW files or every landscape you’ve shot in the past decade, without scrolling through thousands of thumbnails.

Why choose Kamatera for PhotoPrism hosting
PhotoPrism’s tagging, face recognition, and image classification are compute-heavy features. Kamatera lets you configure the CPU and RAM they actually need.
Kamatera lets you expand storage independently of your compute resources, so you can add capacity without touching your setup or migrating to a new instance.
With 20+ data centers across the globe, you can deploy PhotoPrism in the region closest to you and get fast, responsive access every time you open your library.
Your PhotoPrism photos live on your Kamatera VPS and nowhere else. There’s no analysis, no data sharing, and no ad platform sitting behind your storage.

Frequently asked questions
PhotoPrism is an open-source, AI-powered photo management application you can run on your own server or cloud instance. It automatically indexes, tags, and organizes your photo library using machine learning, giving you a searchable, browsable interface similar to Google Photos but without any of your data leaving your infrastructure.
PhotoPrism can be installed on all operating systems supporting Docker, as well as FreeBSD, Raspberry Pi, and many NAS devices.
You should host PhotoPrism on a server with at least 2 cores, 3 GB of physical memory, and a 64-bit operating system. Beyond these minimum requirements, the amount of RAM should match the number of CPU cores.
For more details, see the installation instructions.
PhotoPrism supports most formats, including JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, HEIF, HEIC, MP4, MOV, WebM, and WebP. It also handles most major RAW formats out of the box, so you can browse your library without converting files first.
During indexing, PhotoPrism scans your files for Exif and XMP metadata, extracts GPS coordinates, detects colors and scene types, and uses AI-based image classification to apply labels. The result is a library you can search by location, date, camera, subject, color, quality, and more without manually tagging anything.
At its core, PhotoPrism is a self-hosted alternative to Google Photos. You can browse, search, and organize a photo library of any size through a clean web interface that works on any device.
Beyond basic browsing, you can search by location on an interactive map, share albums with anyone via a secret link, back up your phone automatically in the background, connect to your library from your desktop file manager via WebDAV, and let the AI indexer tag and classify everything so you rarely have to organize manually. It handles photos, videos, and RAW files in the same library, reads all your existing metadata, and keeps running in the background without interrupting your workflow.
Kamatera allows you to create snapshots of your entire server, which captures everything including your photos, PhotoPrism installation, and database in one backup. You can also use standard backup approaches like rsync, automated scripts to copy files to remote storage, or database dumps combined with file backups. Many users run automated daily backups to separate storage or download critical photo collections to local drives as an additional safety measure.
Kamatera offers a free 30-day trial period. This free trial offers services worth up to $100 on 1 server. After signing up, you can use the management console to deploy a server and test our infrastructure. You can select a data center, operating system, CPU, RAM, storage, and other system preferences.
