Secure Netbird Hosting

Zero Trust private networking, fully under your control.

Traditional VPNs route traffic through a central server you don’t control, create single points of failure, and leave your network state in someone else’s hands. NetBird takes a different approach: a WireGuard-based mesh that connects your peers directly, governed by Zero Trust access policies, with a management server that runs wherever you put it.

On Kamatera, that means spinning up a dedicated VM, running the NetBird install script, and walking away with a self-hosted private network that belongs entirely to you. Your keys, your policies, and your data, all operating on our 99.95% uptime guarantee.

NetBird
  • All Kamatera servers run on Intel Xeon Scalable processors with NVMe SSD storage. You only pay for what you use, billed by the minute.
  • With data centers across the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Canada, you can put your NetBird management server close to your users.
  • Kamatera VMs are isolated by design. Your NetBird server, its keys, and its network state never touch a shared management plane.
  • With full root access, snapshot your VM on demand, replicate across regions, and manage your own recovery strategy.

What is Netbird?

NetBird is an open-source network connectivity platform that lets you connect your devices, servers, and cloud resources into a secure private network, without the complexity of traditional VPN setup.

It’s built on WireGuard, a modern VPN protocol known for its speed and lightweight design. NetBird handles the peer-to-peer connection logic on top of it, so your machines can find and talk to each other securely, even across different networks, clouds, or geographic locations.

With NetBird, you can connect a Kamatera cloud server to your on-premises infrastructure, link multiple servers across different regions, or give your team secure remote access to internal resources, all through a single platform with a straightforward management interface.

It’s a good fit for teams that want the security benefits of a private network without the overhead of managing a traditional VPN server.

What are the system requirements for deploying Netbird?

NetBird’s management server is lightweight. You need a VM with at least 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, and 20 GB of storage, running Ubuntu or Debian. You’ll also need Docker and Docker Compose installed, and a public domain name to handle SSL provisioning.

For more detailed information, refer to the Netbird quick start guide.

How is self-hosting different from using NetBird Cloud?

With NetBird Cloud, the management server, signal server, and relay run on NetBird’s infrastructure. When you self-host, all three components run on your own VM. Your network state, peer configuration, and access policies never leave your infrastructure.

Does NetBird work across mixed infrastructure?

Yes. The NetBird agent runs on Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Docker containers, and routers, so you can add virtually any device or workload to your private network regardless of what it’s running on. There’s no requirement for your peers to share a cloud provider, operating system, or network environment.

How do I keep NetBird updated on my Kamatera VPS?

NetBird uses Docker Compose, so updates are a matter of pulling the latest images and restarting the services. It’s worth checking the NetBird changelog before updating, as management server and agent versions need to stay compatible.

Is my data encrypted in transit between peers?

Yes. All peer traffic runs through WireGuard tunnels, which use the Noise protocol framework with modern elliptic curve cryptography. Traffic between peers is end-to-end encrypted and never decrypted by the management server.
