Frequently Asked Questions

What are the system requirements for deploying Axigen?

Deploying Axigen requires certain system specifications to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Below are the recommended system requirements:

CPU: Intel Compatible x64
RAM: 4 GB
Available space on SSD/HDD: 2 GB free space for installation purposes and default configuration files.

Axigen has the following minimal software requirements:
OS Linux, kernel 2.6
glibc version 2.17 or later
libstdc++ version 3.4 or later

For detailed system requirements and installation guides, please refer to the Axigen documentation.

Which operating systems does Axigen support?

Axigen supports the major Linux enterprise distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu LTS, CentOS, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It also runs on Windows Server. Kamatera’s server catalog includes ready-to-deploy images for all of these operating systems.

What are the most popular use cases for Axigen?

Axigen’s biggest user base is managed service providers and hosting companies. The multi-tenant architecture lets them run email for dozens or hundreds of business clients from a single platform, with white-labeled webmail and isolated admin access per customer, which makes it a natural fit for anyone selling email as a service.

The other common thread is organizations that need control SaaS providers can’t offer. Government agencies with data residency requirements, regulated businesses in healthcare and legal, enterprises that have outgrown Microsoft 365 economically, and IT teams that simply want their mail infrastructure on their own terms and not be subject to a vendor’s roadmap and policy decisions.

How many mailboxes can a single Axigen server handle?

A single Axigen instance on appropriately sized hardware can handle tens of thousands of mailboxes. A Kamatera server with 8 vCPUs, 32 GB RAM, and fast NVMe storage will comfortably serve 2,000–5,000 active mailboxes under typical business usage. Lightly used mailboxes scale into the hundreds of thousands on the same hardware because the concurrency load is minimal. Axigen’s sizing guide provides detailed throughput benchmarks for different hardware configurations.

Can I upgrade and downgrade my server specifications?

Kamatera allows vertical scaling—adding vCPUs and RAM—through the management console. When vertical scaling reaches its limits, Axigen’s clustering capabilities allow you to add mail processing nodes, distribute the mailbox database, and separate the inbound SMTP relay from IMAP service onto dedicated hardware. Because Kamatera bills hourly, you can also provision additional capacity during demand spikes, without sizing baseline infrastructure for peak loads.

What kind of customer service can I expect from Kamatera?

Kamatera provides 24/7/365 tech support to help you resolve your queries quickly. Our tech guys are always on duty so that you can always reach a human being who is available and capable of assisting you.

What backup and disaster recovery options are available?

Kamatera provides automated daily snapshots of server volumes that can be restored to a new server instance in minutes. For mail-specific backup, Axigen’s mail store is a set of files on the filesystem, meaning any standard backup tool, like rsync, Restic, Duplicati, or commercial backup agents, works without modification. Many organizations run hourly incremental backups of the Axigen mail store to a separate Kamatera server or to object storage, providing near-real-time recovery points alongside daily full-system snapshots.

Which payment options are accepted by Kamatera?

Our system accepts credit/debit cards issued by your local bank branch with a cardholder’s name. We also accept payments through PayPal. We do not accept virtual, prepaid, or electronic cards.

You can use the Kamatera pricing calculator to select the exact server specifications you need and find out how much you can expect to spend.
